An Interview with Jennifer Koh

Jennifer Koh playing the kayum.

Jennifer Koh of South Korea has been enrolled in the University of Tennessee’s English Language Institute since fall 2005.

Why did you decide to participate in the University of Tennessee’s English Language Institute?

Koh: I decided to come to Knoxville and participate in this program because my father is here doing research at the University of Tennessee. I wanted to take this opportunity to be with him while learning the English language.

What do you like about ELI?

Koh: Interacting with my professors while receiving the opportunity to speak conversational English in class is something I really enjoy. My favorite activity so far has been taking a guided tour of the Knoxville area.

What do you hope do in the future?

Koh: One day I hope to become a music instructor.

What instrument do you play?

Koh: I play an instrument called the kayum. It is a traditional 12-string instrument that originated in China.

Why did you decide to start playing the kayum?

Koh: I was very young the first time I heard the kayum played. Even at such a young age, it inspired me.

How long have you played the kayum?

Koh: I have played the kayum for 11 years.

Is this an instrument that is widely used in South Korea?

Koh: Yes, it is a very popular instrument in South Korea and can be used for various kinds of music. I have several types of kayums; a 12-string that makes five sounds, an 18-string that makes six sounds, and a 25-string that makes seven sounds. The different kinds of kayums can be used for different types of music, both slow and fast.

What do you plan to do upon returning to South Korea?

Koh: When I return to South Korea in July, I will have two years left before I earn my degree in music from Chum Nam University. Upon completion of my studies I am hoping to join an orchestra company and from there teach many people the art of playing the kayum.
