Exploring Our City
(Grades 9-12, rising)
You already know a lot about cities; you just don’t realize it. Experience has taught you where you’ll find what you’re looking for and where you probably won’t; where you’ll feel at home and where you’ll definitely feel out of place. You know what kind of neighborhoods rich folks and poor folks live in and where the homeless are. In this weeklong course, we will use classroom presentations and expeditions into Knoxville – on foot and trolley – to deepen this kind of knowledge into an understanding of how American cities work. We will also see how our cities became what they are today. We will identify their problems, and we will try to figure out what they’ll be like in the future. You’ll need a camera and a lot of curiosity about cities. Instructor: Ron Foresta, professor, UT department of geography.
