Exploring Microbiology
Through Food
(Grades 6-8, rising)
Ever had the “stomach flu”? Ever wonder exactly what made you sick? This course is designed to explore foodborne illnesses by conducting hands-on experiments to learn more about the bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses…think C.S.I. with food! Students will conduct several labs to culture bacteria, stain it, view it under the microscope, and identify specific species. Students will also learn about cell structures and functions, create edible cell models, and build scale structures. Instructors: Dr. Jennifer Richards and Carrie Pratt (Master’s Candidate), UT Food Science and Technology Department.
